The Marine Industry is all about using engineering skills to make the best of the sea’s resources. This can include everything from ship and boat building, to operating luxury yachts and drilling for oil.

If you have a genuine interest in how things work, particularly in a marine environment and if you are methodical and enjoy working with people, then a Marine Apprenticeship could be for you.

Marine Apprenticeships are available in the following sectors at Level 2:

  • Performing Engineering Operations
  • Boat Production & Support Services
  • Engineering Maintenance & Installation
  • Fabrication and Welding Engineering
  • Marine Engineering.

Advanced Apprenticeships at Level 3 are available in:

  • Boat Building & Maintenance
  • Engineering Maintenance
  • Engineering Installation and Commissioning
  • Marine Engineering.

What will I learn?

You will be required to pass an aptitude test and have a reasonable ability in maths, science and English, or be able to demonstrate the potential to achieve a Level 2 NVQ.

The component parts of your Apprenticeship will depend upon the marine sector in which you wish to work such as:

  • Boat Builder /Carpenter
  • Laminator
  • Marine Electrician
  • Marine Engineer.

You will learn about working safely in a marine environment, self-development and working efficiently and effectively within the marine industry.

You will be able to achieve an NVQ at Level 2 in the sector you have chosen.

You will also gain:

  • A Technical Certificate
  • Key Skills in Communication, * A Technical Application of Number and Information Technology at Level 1
  • Key Skills in Working with Others and Improving own Learning at Level 2
  • You will receive training in Health and Safety and how the law applies to you at work.

How will I be trained?

Most of your training will be in your company workplace with your employer and you will be required to attend training sessions at a training centre on a day release basis. We will visit you in your workplace to assess your evidence/portfolio of work and we will provide ongoing support.

What about the future?

A Marine Apprenticeship provides the best possible preparation to achieving trained operator/semi-skilled status in the industry. It may also provide progression to:

An Advanced Apprenticeship that will enable you to achieve an NVQ Level 3. You will develop more advanced craft skills and be prepared for future progression to supervisory or junior management roles.

Programme-Led Apprentices

We are now offering a twenty two week intensive course in Marine Engineering at the Marine Industries Skills Centre in Fareham, Hampshire. Starting in September 2008, students will have the opportunity to gain an NVQ level 2 in Marine, (six of these units will be in Performing Engineering Operations) and will also complete Key Skills as part of the training.

This is a full-time course with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and then enter onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. Successful candidates will receive employment educational allowance and travel costs wil be reimbursed. Other perks will include: bonuses on achievement, attendance, completion of the course and obtaining employment.

Start date is 8th September 2008. The course is available to anyone interested in entering the marine industry. For example; Boatbuilding, Engineers, Marine Electrics, Composites.)
