Hairdressing
Available: Dorset only
Hairdressing is a vibrant part of the fast-moving, ever-changing fashion industry. Hairdressers use a unique combination of skills, working with the public to enhance their well being, helping them to feel good about themselves.
If you are a good communicator and have a genuine interest in people and fashion, if you are creative and confident, then Hairdressing could be the career for you.
An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing will give you a wide range of skills that are needed to work in today’s modern salons.
What will I learn?
Acceptance on to the programme is subject to an initial assessment and interview and if you are not already employed in a salon, you will usually have a short trial period with an employer.
Good GCSE grades in either maths, science, art or English are desirable, as you will have to learn some of the basic rules of chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, however your willingness to learn is the most important factor.
Attention to detail is important and there is no room for error when dealing with the complex chemicals used in salons. We will need to test you for any allergy to certain products before you start an Apprenticeship.
Your Apprenticeship will enable you to achieve an NVQ at Level 2 in Hairdressing, gaining such skills as:
- Shampooing and Conditioning
- Styling and Cutting hair
- Colouring hair using basic techniques
- Advising clients
You will also gain:
- Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number at Level 1
- You will receive training in Health and Safety and how the law applies to you at work.
An Advanced Apprenticeship will enable you to achieve an NVQ Level 3 in Hairdressing. You will develop more advanced craft skills such as:
- Cutting, perming and colouring to create a variety of styles
- Working as a team
- Contributing to the financial success of the business.
How will I be trained?
Most of your practical training and assessments can take place in your workplace with your employer and assessor. You will also need to attend training sessions at a training centre on a regular basis. You will be appointed an individual advisor who will support you with assignments, exams and discussions.
What about the future?
An Apprenticeship in Hairdressing provides the best possible preparation to progressing to senior stylist and salon management. It may also provide progression to an Advanced Apprenticeship.
