Local training provider, Paragon Skills for Industry, is helping a local scout group achieve their dream of visiting Uganda in 2010.
The 38th Bournemouth Scouts and Avon Explorer Scouts have ambitious plans to raise enough funds to take a group of scouts over to the Jinja area of Uganda in the summer of 2010.
The idea involves working alongside Ugandan scouts and other charities to work on educational and community projects that will support local Ugandan disadvantaged children. Scouts from Bournemouth will be raising funds to support the projects but will also be doing hands-on project work whilst camping out above the beautiful White Nile in Uganda, as part of their Explorer programmes.
When the scouts approached Paragon Skills, Chief Executive Gavin Freed immediately saw the connection. “Paragon Skills works with young people to give them the skills they need to succeed in their chosen career. Working with our local scouts means we can support them, but also take the skills agenda overseas and help other developing communities,” he said.
This support from Paragon Skills will boost the scouts’ fundraising activities and provide practical ongoing support in getting local employers involved and stirring up interest for the project.
Project Manager Mike Harley said: “This is a wonderful project that will develop local young people across many disciplines. It also extends a helping hand from Bournemouth directly to the heart of Africa where local children face incredible difficulties and disadvantage. The support from Paragon Skills is invaluable and we are delighted to have them on board as part of the team.”
