As an employer you will be committed to developing your greatest asset – your workforce. Developing their talents will help to secure the future skill needs of your business.
The efficient running of your business can depend heavily on having well trained, reliable and motivated staff, but their day-to-day technical skills, must now also be enhanced by financial and managerial skills.
A Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeship will help build the right skills, as Apprenticeships have been designed by employers to meet the needs of the industry, and have been developed to help create the managers of the future.
What does an Apprenticeship include?
A Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeship includes:
- A Hospitality and Catering NVQ at Level 2
- Communication Key Skill at Level 1
- Application of Number Key Skill at Level 1
The appropriate Technical Certificates from:
- Award in Food Safety in Catering (CIEH) at Level 2
- Certificate in Customer Service at Level 2
- National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (NCPLH)
Technical Certificates focus on the knowledge and understanding that underpins the NVQ, and are provided through a programme of off-the-job training. Apprentices will also learn about Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR).
An Advanced Apprenticeship includes:
- Professional Cookery or Hospitality Supervision NVQ at Level 3
- Communication and Application of Number Key Skills at Level 2
The appropriate Technical Certificates from:
- Supervising Food Safety in Catering
- Certificate in Coaching for Team Leaders and First Line Managers
- Introductory Certificate in First Line Management
You have a key role in developing your Apprentice’s learning plan. We work with you to ensure that the Apprenticeship meets the needs of your business. The exact mix of NVQ units will depend upon the hospitality sector in which your Apprentice works.
Mandatory units of the NVQ could include:
- Maintain a safe, hygienic and secure working environment
- Contribute to effective teamwork
- Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
- Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food

In addition you will select from a wide range of optional units in order to tailor the Apprenticeship to the requirements of your business, such as:
- Prepare and clear the bar area
- Serve food at the table
- Deal with the arrival of customers
- Maintain and deal with payments
There is an extensive range of options relating to the preparation and cooking of different types of dishes.
